About The Town – Mosonmagyaróvár

Mosonmagyaróvár (www.mosonmagyarovar.hu) is a town of rivers. It is located at the side of the Mosoni-Duna, the Lajta flows through the town, the Lajta channel and more small rivers that served the town’s mills.

Mosonmagyaróvár is known for its history. The town has 13 nationally listed buildings that influence the city’s landscape. The town’s historic roots can be seen in the street layout, which dates from the middle ages.

The town is located at the meeting point of the River Lajta and the Mosoni-Duna 15km from the Austrian and Slovakian borders. It is located on the M1 highway. The location of the town is both geographically and economically convenient and so one can clearly see why it was settled in this location in Roman times. Originally Mosonmagyarovar was a Roman military base called Ad Flexum. It was the capital city of the surrounding area and because of its location and the flatland surrounding it, the transportation of livestock and cereals ran through the town.

The towns Moson and Magyaróvár were fused in 1939 and the population is now approximately 31,000 people.

Albert Kázmér, son-in-law of Mária Terézia founded the agricultural university in 1818. The university is located in the fort building in the city. Famous alumni include Nickolaus Lenau, an Austrian poet who studied here from 1822-23. There is a statue and a stone bench dedicated to his memory on the campus of the university.

The Hapsburg palace in Déak square plays a very important part in history. In October 1847 Szécheny István stayed there and it was in 1848 that Kossuth Lajos famously urged the people to join the war of independence. The monument in the centre of Déak square is a statue with three people, one of whom is Nepomuki Szent János. Along the street there are several houses built in the baroque style. Nearby is the old county hall. What now functions as the city hall was built in 1891 in the Neo-Renaissance style. The adornment of the town is the Cselley House. This house is home to the collection of the Hansági museum, the industrial history collection and the Gyurkovich collection.

The Mosonmagyarovar Plébánia church was built in Roman times and destroyed in 1529. It has one steeple and one aisle. Its restoration was begun in 1668 when they laid the foundations and the interior design was completed in 1770. The crypt in this church contains the remains of Hapsburg Frigyes and his wife Isabella.

The main street has classic and copf style houses as well as those of baroque style. This street was also the home of world famous violinist and music teacher Flesch Károly. There is a plaque identifying the house. In memory of Flesch Károly there is a violin competition held every two years in the town’s culture centre which is named after him.

The Rosalia chapel was built for the memory of the bubonic plague and all of the lives lost at the beginning of the 18th century. The Roman-Catholic church in Moson was built in the baroque style in the 1750’s. The Neo-Baroque front was added at the beginning of the 20th century.

Hungary

Hungarians are famous not just for their borderless hospitality, but for their rich culture, gourmet tastes and their fine wines. In the past, this country that dominated the Carpathian Valley was a force to be reckoned with in Europe and it is said that people in Western Europe prayed for God to protect them from the arrows of Hungarians. The Hungarian kingdom was also a very important defence point for Western Christianity.

Three quarters of Hungary is flatlands. There are many hills and some mountains but there are no very high mountains. The highest point of the country is in the Mátra mountains, Kékes Teto (1014m). The lowest point is near Szeged, Gyálarét (78m).

The two most important rivers in the country are the Danube/Duna (its length in hungary is 427 km) and the Tisza (its length in hungary is 598 km) Both rivers flow from North to South through the country. The west part, the dunántúl – in Roman times Pannonia – is mostly hilly. The biggest and warmest lake of Europe is located here, Lake Balaton.

The middle part (Duna-Tisza köze) and the east part (Tiszántúl) it is mostly flat. The Hungarian plains “Magyar Puszta”, are a popular tourist destination where you can see typical animals and folk traditions. In the National Park Hortobágy (Hortobágy) and National Park Kiskunsági (Bugac, Apajpuszta, Lajosmizse) there are spectacular horse shows to entertain visitors. The west Dunántúl region in the Szigetköz also has similar horse shows.

Hungary has a moderate climate. It is on the border of the three big climate zones; Oceanic, Continental and Mediterranean. Because of the Carpathian valley the weather is quite predictable. The warmest month is July with a daily average temperature of 20 degrees celcius. The coldest month is January which has an average of 2.1 degrees Celsius. Sunny hours are 2038 hours annually, which is amongst the highest in Europe.

The country is deservedly famous for its individual tastes. The delicious and spicy foods are characteristic of the traditional Hungarian kitchen. Over time the cuisine developed and became more international but retained their special characteristic tastes that all the tourists should try.

The basic of the Hungarian traditional kitchen are the rántás and goulash. The other side of the traditional kitchen is the seasoning, (red paprika, onion, cumin etc). It is essential when in Hungary to try the paprika chicken, the goulash (from game or beef), the stuffed cabbage, the fish soup or the goulash soup. After the main meal try a piece of rétes (strudel) (apple, marrow-poppy seed or cottage cheese) or the somloí galuska, a gundel crepe or chestnut puree.

Of course with good food one should have a good drink. Most famous are the Hungarian wines, the fiery villányi, or the silky Balaton-Felvidéki, or the sweet Tokaji dessert wines.

In Hungary people regularly drink an aperitif, a good fruity Palinka, plum, apricot or cherry (Hungarikum) or a Zwack Unicum.
